Does Garcinia Cambogia Work? Here's what Science Says
When was the first time you heard about garcinia cambogia? Was it when Dr. Oz was touting it as an unprecedented fat burner? Maybe you were bombarded with online advertisements for it. Perhaps, your local supplement store clerk tried to upsell you on it. Put simply: The extract that you have a hard time pronouncing has been getting a good deal of attention for the last decade.
Is the fitness industry obsession with the supplement justified, or is it the result of very clever marketing? Let’s take a look at the science behind this herbal extract to see if you should consider jumping on the bandwagon.
WHAT IS IT?
Native to Southeast Asia, garcinia cambogia is a pumpkin-shaped fruit that is used as a spice and accompanying side dish in curries. It isn’t the fruit itself that has been getting the attention; however, it’s the superstar extract found within it called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA.

In a study performed on mice, HCA was shown to be a safe and effective way to suppress appetite. One of the contributors to obesity is a constant feeling of hunger. Couple this with an excess of calories during each meal and you can see how the accumulation of fat mass takes place. By controlling appetite, one may be able to consume less overall calories per day to support a healthy weight loss.
INCREASES FAT BURNING
Studies suggest that it may also play a direct role in fat burning. One study published in the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated how HCA promoted fat oxidation while sparing glycogen. A study (published in Current Therapeutic Research Clinical and Experimental) presented two groups: one taking HCA and one taking a placebo. At the conclusion of 16 weeks, researchers confirmed that the group taking the garcinia cambogia had “significantly reduced visceral, subcutaneous, and total fat areas compared with the placebo group.” Researchers also concluded that garcinia cambogia was a safe and effective way to support weight loss.
